[Video Essay] Window

[Voice-over]:

If each person has to write down only one word to describe the experience at the beginning of 2020, what would you like to choose?

For me, it is the window.

To be more prudent, I looked it up on the dictionary before making the decision.

There are various windows in our lives. They are in different shapes, having different appearances.

Sometimes we even neglect their existences when gazing into it.

They are incredibly low-key about themselves.

During the days spent at home, we communicate with a larger world through the windows on the electronic screens. E-resources, online classes, social media and so forth.

Thanks to the internet, some of us are lucky enough to continue the daily routines during a particular period.

Through these windows, we can reach the outside world. And at the same time, things come in and fill our minds. They never stop, round the clock, till we get confused and worried.

The amazing part of the window is that they like to speak in a silent language but have a thousand stories. Windows do not move, while the pictures inside are not the same. From day to night. From winter to summer, it often tells the changes. So at different moments, you see a difference, through different windows, you see a difference. But do not forget that you can choose to pull the curtains when necessary, and some things never change.

[On-screen text]:

Window is more a bridge but not prevention.

It allows us to see the outside and also offers a chance to reflect ourselves.

A poem says:“love… consist in looking outwards together…”, the same as tomorrow and hope.

[VO]:

These are the reasons why I choose the word “window” as the answer.

Your video is simple, smooth, orderly hierarchy and the organization of your video is great. The topic is very clear. Due to the quarantine, windows become the connection of people. E-resources, online classes, social media and also real window act as bridges between us and the world. It reflected the real situation during the COVID-19.

Hi, QIn Ya! I really like your topic and the interesting way to document people’s lives during the COVID-19. The ideas of the Internet as a window to connect people living in separated space and of windows as a silent observer to document the changes and the stories that happened in this period of time are clearly shown in the video. Also, I really appreciate your nice drawing technique and good use of color to highlight your emotion and expression. The scenery changes are smooth and interesting. All in all, the video successfully brings an innovative view to ‘window’ and motivate the audience to find their own view of it.

Hi Qin Ya! This is Catherine. I really appreciate the in-depth analysis of windows as in both physical and virtual one. Your topic is simple yet powerful in expressing a point: the windows acting as a bridge. Windows exist in every building and every laptop, but the importance of windows increased significantly during these times. This everyday item has become the only connection to the exterior. I like that you pointed out that the two types of windows actually serve the same purpose of letting people see the outside world. One question I would think about is — how can we use this everyday item to its fullest potential in a way that we can better ourselves and our lives during this hard time?

Hi, I think used the word ‘window’ in meaning to show the communication between people is very nice. Those virtual meaning of the window used effectively to show the message that you wanted to send. I also like the formation of the video, which is an animation that is created by your paintings. I think these drawings are really concise and interesting that many audience will have a curiosity about this video. I think the use of the blue color shows the isolation of nowadays. I also liked your use of sound effects like those sounds of the sea when the view of the sea shows through the window. I think your message is nice to show that quarantine is not the prevention of communication between each other.
