[Video Essay] HOME KONG

In this documentary, i would like to grab this opportunities to discover the another side of our home, instead of only boredom or dullness. Under the threat of corona virus, i understand that many of us feel fear of the life we are not used to, and stressed on the repetitive daily work. In fact, it is normal to feel frustrated under this situation and being negative towards the environment. From this video, we could see that our home is better than what we supposed to be, and quarantine does not seems useless or even an obstacle to our life. Instead, it is a perfect timing to separate ourselves from the world, and to explore more about ourselves and our home. For instance, we can pick up the hobbies that is forgotten, or learn some new interest during this crucial period. Sometimes, thinking in a positive sense may help us stress out and be ready for the challenges coming ahead. By using the relaxing background music and the vintage filter, i would like to create the atmosphere of warmness, and inspire people to be more aware of their home. Moreover, i have used the skills of zooming, focus to make my video more content and interesting, and make the activities at home could be more different from the usual way. Besides, i have added the subtitles which is easy to read in the middle, so the audience could appreciate the video and reflect on themselves at the same time. Moreover, i have added my imagination into this video, so as to create more humorous element in our home. These imagination may seems unreachable in our real life, but in quarantine, these dreams could come true under our imagination, or even being achieved in one day.  Last but not least, the candles symbolise our hope and wishes during the corona virus, and our home kong could be blessed in the future. In short, i hope everyone could learn to appreciate our home in a positive way, but not consider it as a cage or prison, as this home have backed us in the darkest nights, and being available whenever we are facing any obstacles. That’s home kong.

An interesting documentary that emphasizes ‘home’ in a positive way regarding this epidemic health crisis. Each sentence that appears on the scene by scene helps to improve understanding of the message. Additionally, the camera technique of focus and zoom was rapidly used that was well-combined with the background sound. Especially, I like the end scene where you move out of the focus of the candle and saying ‘that’s what HK suppose to be’. I felt the warm and hopeful atmosphere, as the candlelight kind of symbolized ‘warm and safe home’. Jump cuts also contributed to making the overall image of home as a warm place, that well- matches with the title ‘home kong’. Well done:)

Hello, your video editing skills are really good and this video is really smooth. Those captions on the video is easy to read, and fonts fit well to the video. I also feel very interesting in the topic that you used in this video. The positive perspective of the ‘home’ showed in the video is very unique from other video journals because many people use negative or more serious mood during the quarantine period. I think it is very interesting to show that people started to feel the positivity of their house, which is those things that not able to feel from everyday life before. I really feel interested and I think your video is very nice.

Your video bares a vlog style that is commonly used in youtube videos. The form is at the same time an advantage and a disadvantage. This form enables you to document your daily life in a creative way, combining visuals, soundtrack and also text stimulation. This effectively leads the audiences though your curated scenes. The animated title and upbeat background music draw the audience into your video. Further, the creative and smooth transitions are also well-thought-out together with the soundtrack.

However, the fragmentation of scenes used in your video does not help convey a strong narrative. What are you trying to inform more about the positive views of home? What is the issue discussed here? At the moment, there is no bibliography that informs us of what stimulated this change in the idea of home. Thus, the piece remains not a documentary but a recording of your life. It will be much more insightful if relevant research is done on this change in perceptions of interior spaces. It will also help you formulate an argument and make your video much more compelling.

At the moment the written text conveys much more than the visuals. It will be helpful for you to go back to the video and observe whether it conveys the aspects you’ve mentioned in the text.
